Hydraulic hose ferrules
Ferrules are the highest-volume consumable in a hose assembly shop. They are also the part most often bought on price alone — which is why crimp failures tend to trace back to the ferrule.
What a ferrule does
It is the outer sleeve. When the crimper closes, the ferrule compresses the hose cover and the wire reinforcement onto the hose end's insert, and locks the assembly together. The seal is not in the ferrule; the strength is.
Types
| Type | Construction | Pairs with |
|---|---|---|
| One-piece / swaged ferrule | Single shell, crimped directly onto the hose | SAE 100R1AT, R2AT, R3, R6 — the mainstream |
| Two-piece ferrule | Separate ferrule and insert | Braided hose where the insert is matched separately |
| Interlock ferrule | Internal interlock ring mechanically engages the wire braid or spiral | SAE 100R12, R13, R15, 4SP, 4SH |
| No-skive ferrule | Crimps over the cover without removing it | Where skiving is not practical, at some cost in grip |
| Reusable ferrule / sleeve | Screwed, no crimper needed | Field repair kits |
| Stainless ferrule | 316 body | Chemical, food-adjacent and marine duties |
Sizing
Ferrule size follows the hose dash number, but the series has to match the hose construction and the crimp machine's die set. A -08 R2 ferrule and a -08 R12 ferrule are both for 1/2" hose and are not the same part. See the hose size chart for the dash-to-bore table.
Send us the hose brand and construction printed on the cover, plus the crimper you use, and
we will match the ferrule series — that is usually faster than cross-referencing part numbers from three
different catalogues.
What to specify
- Dash size (-04 through -32; -06, -08 and -12 are the volume sizes)
- Hose construction / standard the ferrule is rated for
- Ferrule style (one-piece, interlock, no-skive, stainless)
- Finish (zinc, zinc-nickel, none for stainless)
- Annual volume — ferrule pricing is strongly volume-dependent, and so is whether a private-label or custom-marked ferrule makes sense
For assembly shops: we can supply ferrule and hose end as a matched
kit per hose build, with the crimp specification (die and target diameter) included. That removes the
mismatch that causes most first-batch failures, and it makes your crimp records defensible.
